The Minority in Parliament has expressed concerns about a possible disruption to the academic calendar, cautioning that 2024 BECE graduates might not be able to begin their secondary education as SHS 1 students in September.
During a press conference on Thursday, August 22, Minority Ranking Members Hon. Peter Nortsu-Kotoe and Dr. Apaak disclosed that WAEC has not yet started marking the exams due to a lack of funds. They pointed out that the government still owes WAEC, which is preventing the organization from hiring examiners to mark the exams.
"Currently, WAEC has had to postpone the marking of BECE scripts from this month to September because they lack the necessary funds," said Hon. Nortsu-Kotoe. "The government owes WAEC for the BECE, and we are calling for the government to pay this money so that WAEC can organize the marking in time. This will disrupt the academic calendar, with SHS 1 students unable to start school as planned on September 27, 2024."
The Minority urged the government to promptly release funds to WAEC to ensure timely marking and a smooth transition for BECE graduates into secondary education.
